Abstract
Art and design education today face the challenge of developing socially and culturally sustainable models in an era where issues are global in scope and online spaces suggest new ways of providing international experiences. For 10 years, students and professors at 8 universities have done exactly that under the name International Art Collaborations (INTAC). At OCADU, Professors Peter Sramek and Meera Margaret Singh lead the International Collaboration Studio course in the Faculty of Art, currently working with partners in Finland, South Korea, Germany, China and Mexico.
INTAC is not only a framework that empowers students to work together on dynamic art projects, it also provides an iterative incubator for implementing approaches to collaborative education. As a progressive laboratory, INTAC aims to foster a contemporary take on traditional individualistic art-making and prepare students to understand realities of cultural diversity and inter-dependence as they engage questions crucial to themselves and their international partners. As future professional image creators, they are better prepared to positively impact 21st century media environments.
