Abstract: | Uncertainty can be considered one of the defining features of modern life. This thesis explores uncertainty through the development of studio work. There is a connection between uncertainty and the anxiety I feel as a person living in the contemporary world. Uncertainty and anxiety are both the subjects of this thesis as well as the fuel for my creativity. However, it is the positioning of the viewer in relation to the work that is central to its completion. In this thesis, there will be a focus on the ways in which the subjective experience of the artist leads to the creation of highly personal artworks which can be objectively experienced by a viewer. In order to explore this connection between artist and viewer, this thesis exhibition will include an installation, Performance Anxiety, which will engage viewers in an interactive artwork that incorporates the principles of relational aesthetics. |
