Abstract:

The research project focuses on business design and business model innovation in the context of platforms. It was motivated by the growing interest in transformation of conventional organizations into platforms, and a lack of comprehensive methodology for that particular kind of business change. The main purpose of the research was to design a generic platforming methodology for transformation of existing organizations (fully or partially) into platforms - based on a mix-method approach, new tools and processes, and a roadmap. It offers an innovation “compass” for navigating the still uncharted waters of platform design of existing organizations. The early prototype of the Design Research Platform of the OCAD University was used to illustrate the methodology and facilitate its finalization. This responded to the Main Research Question: How to transform a conventional organization into a platform one? However, the overall purpose of the research would not have been achieved without a more comprehensive understanding of platforms based on the notion of the “meta” platform business model and considerations of variations of this model. This was guided by two sets of Specific Research Questions: a) What is a platform, and what are its broader social implications?, and b) What makes platform a “meta” business model, and what types might be envisaged? The Introduction provides an overview of key arguments and the need for a more comprehensive approach to platforms. The first part of the report deals with conceptual issues, while the second part describes platforming methodology and illustrates its application in an early prototype for the OCAD University. The concluding chapter focuses on the opportunities for continued design research on platforms and proposes what might be the future of platforms. Appendices provide more background information with regard networks and communities or practice, and platform design methodologies.
