Abstract
An exchange of letters between Elizabeth Tunstall and Jonathan Woodham generated by Woodham's article, 'National Design Policies in the United States: Recycling the 'Emperor's New Clothes?'' in Design Issues, vol. 26, Spring 2010, pp.27-46. Dr Tunstall, as the organiser of the US National Design Policy Initiative, and author of 'Redesigning America's Future' and of the 2008 US National Design Policy Summit Report, challenges Dr Woodham's analysis of the report. She contends that there are three major errors in his methodological approach: his use of 'Redesigning America's Future' as his main text, instead of the 2008 Design Policy report; his assignment of authorship of the documents is inconsistent, and failed to use extensive primary sources available; and that he has ignored the real activities of the Initiative, instead criticising the blandness of the document. Woodham replies to each of these arguments.
