| Abstract: | Black Joy has unique energies and a collective synergy that co-designers are using to sustain their daily lives and imagine futures. However, how Black people and communities define, design, and remake this energy can be similar or different. To counter deficit-based and problem-focused public health and design research, this project takes a holistic approach by asking the African, Black and Caribbean diaspora (ABCD) what is working well, what is needed (if anything), and how joy will be carried into future sports, recreation and leisure programming and community spaces built for us and by us. The project is grounded in participatory co-design, meaning co-designers had the power and autonomy to choose their preferred medium and methods of expression to self- and co-reflect on their lived experiences. After reflecting on their preferred methods, I illustrated how they aligned with or expanded the literature on Black Storytelling, Photovoice and Artifact Show and Tell. Using artifacts such as illustrations, drawings, poetry, photos, and oral storytelling, co-designers' individual lives combined to create a rich multimodal anthology of the Black quotidian (everyday life) in the past, present, and future of sports, recreation, and leisure programming and community spaces. In this research, anthology means co-curating a range of multimodal artifacts, which you can find in the findings chapter. I invite you to read, browse, listen or skim this project in any order that calls to or resonates with you; it does not need to be read in chronological order. |
