Abstract:

Illusion of Time is a research-creation project that explores dimensional and nonsequential conceptions of time through hybrid art practice by combining physical and digital media. By spatializing temporal concepts across both virtual and physical environments, this research investigates how art can visualize and embody the experience of nonsequential time. Drawing inspiration from theoretical physics, such as three-dimensional time (Kletetschka, 2025) and the holographic principle (Susskind, 2008), this exploration interprets abstract theories of time into artistic practice. The three-dimension time theory proposes that time extends beyond a single linear dimension, while the holographic principle proposes that each part can reflect the whole. These theories inspire this research to consider time as an interconnected whole rather than linear sequence.
Working across physical materials (e.g. glass) and digital media (e.g. extended reality), the research examines how hybrid spaces can reinterpret the concept of time through material and spatial exploration. In my approach virtual space, in this case extended reality and game engines, function as a timeless and immaterial environment for documenting, preserving, and reconstructing physical spaces and artworks. These digital traces document moments of lived experience that can be revisited, questioning conventional notion of linear time.
Guided by a research-through-creation approach, Illusion of Time generates knowledge through material exploration and experimentation. I propose that meaning can be generated through the process of making itself and that immersive art is used as a method and means to interpret, document and visualize nonlinear space and time.
