| Abstract: | Grocery stores are an essential part of daily life, yet they are rarely examined as environments of accessibility. For many neurodivergent adults, sensory and spatial characteristics such as fluorescent lighting, background noise, and crowded aisles can create significant barriers to shopping independently and comfortably. While some retailers have introduced sensory-friendly shopping hours, these initiatives often provide temporary accommodations rather than addressing the environmental factors that contribute to sensory overload. Existing research has primarily focused on autistic children [autism spectrum disorder (ASD)] and their caregivers, leaving the experiences of neurodivergent adults underrepresented. The findings highlight the importance of predictability, and advocacy for sensory regulation that centers the voices and experiences of neurodivergent individuals in addressing and guiding more accessible retail design. The evolving design recommendations aim to move beyond temporary accommodations toward more inclusive and equitable environments that support a wider range of human needs. |
